To understand the myriad legends of
Langkawi, it is advisable for you to first
visit the Taman Legenda (Legends
Park). The main entrance located next to the
Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) is where
a stone archway introduces visitors to the
making of Langkawi from what was known as
Gondwanaland - that hypothetical
protocontinent of the Southern Hemisphere
which, according to the theory of plate
tectonics, broke up into India, Australia,
Antarctica, Africa, and South America.
Walk through the archway and proceed along
the shaded tree lined walkway, and make
detours to the right where various
sections will relate the colourful and
intertwining legends of the islands.

Of the many
myths and
legends,
the titanic fight between Mat Raya and Mat Chinchang
is the most dramatic and fantastic. It is said that the damage caused
by their duel gave birth to the names of
many of the places in Langkawi. This
includes Gunung Raya, Gunung Machinchang, Kuah
(said to have been formed when in the course
of their
struggle, they overturned a pot of gravy, which
in Bahasa Melayu is "kuah"),
hot water (Ayer Hangat),
Tanjung Cincin (Cape of the Ring), and
Belanga Pecah (Broken Earthen Pot).
Taman Legenda is a great place to rest
and escape the afternoon heat.
