The starfruit,
also known as carambola, is another non-native of
Malaysia but has taken a stand of its own among
local fruits. The fruit was once only cultivated
in kampungs, backyards and gardens. With better
researched varieties being introduced in the last
two decades, the
starfruit has made its way into
the big league with plantations spreading to hundreds
of hectares across the country. This very refreshing
and juicy fruit has translucent yellow or greenish-yellow
flesh. Its deep ridges produce delightful star-shaped
cross-sections.
Rich in vitamins and minerals, the starfruit is sought after as a natural remedy for
high-blood pressure. Two average sized starfruit
provide
no less than 600 mg of potassium. |
