The Rebak Marina berths

Latitude   :  06º Deg 17.6' Min N

The Rebak Island, named after the native Rebak tree, is one of the 99 isles that make up the legendary Langkawi. Being part of Malaysia, naturally the island shares the great tropical climate. Beautiful rock formations and lush rainforest as old as a million years take up much of Pulau Rebak Besar (one of the two islands, to be exact). All around is the inviting waters of the lower Andaman Sea, teeming with marine life and just perfect for a range of water sports and recreational activities.

The Rebak Marina is popular with cruisers, although yachties (with a smirk) call it 'Alcatraz.' It is best to contact them in advance if you plan a long stay because both the berths and the hardstanding are usually pretty full. Call on VHF Ch 69 on close approach. It is difficult to spot the marina from seaward till you are practically there. Masts are hidden by land. Depths at the entrance, are shallow with 2–3m at low water. The entrance could be dangerous, or at least very iffy in a strong SW wind. Both entrance and channel are lit at night. Currently there are 128 wet berths with an extension planned.

This beautiful, peaceful marina/resort, carved out of a former mangrove swamp in the centre of its own island, is connected by 15-minute ferry to the main island of Langkawi. Minimum depth 2.5 metres. The marina is very well protected but the air is rather still due to the hidden location. Many live-aboards fit air conditioners. The marina is also under the new airport's flight path, but the noise is not obtrusive. The marina office will hold mail for you. DHL packages have to be collected in town. There is a ferry service, but not to Kuah. It goes across to a pier called the Langkasuka Jetty at the rear of the former Aqua Beat Water Recreation Centre. There's not a lot to do on Rebak, but in the late afternoon you'll find sailors at the swimming pool, soaking away the day's heat while discussing impellers and delamination. Many have been here for a long time and have formed a close-knit family. Staff of the resort is very friendly, befitting a first-class resort. Electricity to berths is unmetered, so many liveaboards have connected their boats to air-conditioning units. The result is you can look across the marina at mid-afternoon and not see a soul, as they are hiding inside their cool boats. Tell someone you don't have air con and they look at you with pity, as if you can't afford shoes. The marina office can arrange two-year visa extensions for liveaboards. This privilege is available only at Rebak.
