Pulau
Beras Basah is probably the best island
hopping destination that is easily
accessible from most jump-off points on the
main island. The island is so accessible
that the Awana Porto Malai Resort sometimes
ferries its guests to the white sandy
beaches of this pristine island for a
barbeque cookout or other activities.
With so much
superlatives that describe the island,
almost all island hopping conveners will
include a stop-over at Pulau Beras Basah.
However, a brief stint on the powdery white
beach will not do justice enough. Perhaps,
you may need to arrange for a day's drop-off
with your boat man and indulge in the
exquisite natural ambiance of the place.

Besides the
inviting powdery-white sandy beach and the
lush verdant backdrop, the waters around
Pulau Beras Basah also offer other
interesting propositions. This includes the
school of playful dolphins (estimated to be
about 50 at the last count) and the hundreds
of eagles, which are so used to being fed by
the boatmen as a show for the gawking
throngs of tourists. The dolphins are quite
elusive and make their appearance only
occassionally. Pulau Beras Basah ( Island of
Wet Rice) has its own unique legend that is
invariably linked to the other
legends
of Langkawi.
Opening Hours:
Opens all the time.
Access
:
Take a boat from the beach (next to Kuah
Jetty) or Pantai Chenang. Fares are about
RM35 per person (sharing) or
RM200-RM250 for the whole boat (max 8
persons). Boats also operate from other
locations, including the Awana Porto Malai
marina.
Facilities:
The island is still very much
pristine -- so pristine that despite the
daily boat loads of tourists toilet
facilities are lacking. Considering its
populariy it would be a good idea for such
amenity to be provided.
