LANGKAWI:
LANGKAWI: If Langkawi makes it into the
Unesco Global Network of Geoparks, it
will be the only geopark in the world
that is surrounded by 99 islands.
Langkawi Development Authority (Lada)
general manager Datuk Kamarulzaman Abdul
Ghani said another unique selling point
was that it would be a duty-free one.
“We are optimistic Langkawi would make
it into the Unesco Geopark listing,” he
said after accompanying a Unesco panel
of assessors to Gua Kelawar yesterday.
A geopark is an area with significant
geological heritage.
The panel comprises Prof Zhao Xun of the
Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences,
International Geoscience Programme
deputy secretary Dr Margarete Patzak and
Dr Patrick McKeever of Northern Ireland
Geological Survey.
They have visited Machinchang Cambrian
Geoforest Park, Pasir Tengkorak, Kilim
Karst Geoforest Park, Kota Mahsuri and
Laman Padi.
They will be visiting Pulau Dayang
Bunting Marble Geoforest Park today.
A Unesco meeting in June will decide on
the Langkawi findings.
