Langkawi is a
haven for yachties. At least four mooring
locations are available, three of which are
full-fledged marinas with modern
international-class facilities. The
marinas at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and Rebak
Marina on the island of Pulau Rebak Besar
have made their presence felt for quite some
time. Rebak Marina has been expanded and now
has a range of repair facilities as well as
a dry dock. It is a safe place to leave the
boat while visiting Langkawi. The only draw
back here is that its located away from the
main island, and the marina itself is almost
landlocked.
The latest
addition is the modest plastic-pontoon
mooring in front of the Jeti Pelancongan
behind the Al-Hana Mosque in
Kuah, where the rates are about the
cheapest. The dock currently charges about
RM70 per week and RM250 per month for
sailboats. For dinghy the rates are RM3,
RM19 & RM70 for daily, weekly and monthly,
respectively. Fresh water is 3 sen per litre
(Tel: +604-969 8300 / 8301). This place is
conveniently accessible to the commercial
hub of Kuah town.
The former
Langkasuka Boat Club is no more. The place
is deserted and mainly serves the ferry boat
plying between the jetty and Pulau Rebak
Besar. Boat ferry fare to the island is RM4
one way. Free to yachties using the marina
facilities and guests of the Rebak Marina
Resort.
The December 2004 Tsunami, which caused a
'shadow wave' to hit certain parts of the
island caused some serious damage to
pontoons and berth at Rebak Marina and
Telaga Harbour. All of of these have since
been fully repaired. The Bass Harbour, which
fronts Kuah Jetty allows anchoring for
yachts.

Telaga Harbour

Great location albeit away from the
madding crowd compared to the Langkawi
Yacht Club. Purpose built. A
self-contained precinct with restaurants
and bars on one side and the marina
management, petrol station, fast food
outlet, cafe serving middle eastern,
local and western cuisine, bank, custom
house,mussallah (Muslim prayer room) and
other conveniences on the other.

Rebak Marina

They call this place 'the
alcatraz.' Perhaps, its enclosed design,
locked-in by the island and the limited
amenities compared to Telaga Harbour and the
Langkawi Yacht club makes it rather
'claustrophobic.' This quiet marina is built on former
mangrove swamp. A 15-minute ferry ride to the main
island. Well protected from the elements. Minimum depth 2.5 metres. |
