Complementing the ‘heaty’ durian is
the ‘cool’ mangosteen. Its perceived
cooling properties following a durian
feast has earned it the name, Queen of
Malaysian fruits. The mangosteen fruit
has a smooth dark purple skin when
mature and pale green when young. The
pulp is white and sweet with a
distinctive light bouquet. Mangosteens
are usually eaten fresh although it is
also made into jam and beverage.
Mangosteen trees are cultivated in
mixed village orchards
in Muar and Segamat in Johor, Kuala
Kangsar in Perak, Ulu Langat in
Selangor and
in Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. The
fruit is also exported to countries
including
Singapore and Japan where it retails
at much higher prices. |
