Located just adjacent to the Al-Hana Mosque in Kuah town, the
10-acre CHOGM Park is a tribute the 1989
Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting,
which was held in Malaysia. Still a
fledgling destination then, Langkawi was the
retreat for the participants, who were
immediately captivated by the islands.
Perhaps, the occasion saw the first ever
large scale promotion of what was to become
a world-class tropical island holiday
destination.
The white concrete structure would fly all
the flags of member countries for many years
until recently, when only the flags of
Malaysia and the state of Kedah would
flutter. Immediately overlooking this white
edifice is a green park with a scattering of
giant replicas representing the myriad
legends of the islands.
With the
trees now all grown, the CHOGM Park has
matured and offers lots of shaded areas to
rest and take a respite from the midday heat. You can easily
enter the park from the
main road (Jalan Persiaran Putra). The beach
next to the park is the only beach in Kuah
town. Not particularly conducive for
swimming, this beautiful stretch of white
sands is a great place to hang out in the
evenings.
