An
indigenous fruit of Peninsular
Malaysia, the cempedak exudes a
distinctly strong smell like the
durian. It is grown in home gardens
and orchards in Perak, Pahang, Kedah
and Terengganu. The insides are made
up of light yellow to golden orange
fleshy balls attached to the core of
the fruit. The cempedak can be eaten
raw or fried in batter as chempedak
goreng, which is a popular teatime
snack among Malaysians.
Young chempedak
can be boiled and eaten with pounded chillies during rice meals. The seeds
can also be eaten roasted or boiled.
Like the durian, chempedak is not
allowed in hotel rooms and airlines.
