Malaysia
will celebrate its 53rd Independence Day
(Merdeka) on the 31st of August 2009.
The
auspicious occasion will see thousands
thronging Kuah's Dataran Lang (Eagle Square)
to synchronise with the countdown to midnight
when the main celebrations in Kuala Lumpur
kicks-off.
It was on 31st August 1957 when history was
made as the British flag, the Union Jack, was
lowered and the 'Jalur Gemilang' ,
the Malaysian flag proudly
hoisted.
The country's first Prime Minister,
Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj pronounced
this moment of freedom in Kuala Lumpur with the famous shouts of Merdeka!
Merdeka! Merdeka! (Independence!) while
the rest of the young nation followed the
events on the radio.
For over 50 years, the Merdeka Day
celebrations have been marked by parades
featuring uniformed bodies, corporate
players, school children, cultural dancers,
athletes and Malaysians from all walks of
life.
However, in recent years, the event
has grown into a much anticipated and
exciting month-long celebration nationwide.
Malaysians and tourists in Langkawi all
share in the joy and excitement of this
happy occasion. It will be a mesmerising event
that adds more colour to Langkawi.
So, come on and
join the revelry - be part of an extended
family of Malaysians. You are most welcome. |
